Kale Brownie! “Kale” bonne surprise!

I came back from holidays in France full of good resolutions in my suitcase! One of them is about to try to source and eat more locally.

It drives me insane to see fruit and veggies covered by plastic in the supermarket, why on Earth do you need to wrap bananas in plastic bags??

So I start to do my bit and decide to order from a local place called the paddock, ethically my kind of people and they deliver to your door step!

Receiving this Veg box it is like when I was a kid and I opened my Kinder surprise, out of the 3 eggs in the box you got a special character, my favourite was the frog’s collection (I know what you are going to think lol) Just to say that you never know what you will get, sometimes it is joy sometimes it is deception.

So when I found that in my box it was not an happy face….

Family of cabbage obviously (so by definition I am not too keen)

Kale !

From that moment, I was on a mission!

I was not mentally prepared to listen to the complaints, the grimaces of the family when that would end up on their plate to finally end up in the bin, especially when I have been working my ass off in my kitchen all Sunday morning!

NON NON and NON!

This is where you need to use some evil imagination: pass off some greens with them knowing it!

Can we feel the potential role of greens in desserts? Yes we can!

Unanimous verdict!

My husband:after the second slice…” that’s a very good brownie”

My daughter: ” Tu n’as jamais fait un brownie aussi bon!” You’ve never made a brownie so tasty

Here we are… I will share the recipe with you now, and feel free to tell ( or not) your kids that you put kale in it:)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of boiled kale ( 10 leaves with the central part)
  • 180g plain flour (1 cup 1/4)
  • 85 g dark chocolate
  • 210g granulated sugar (1 cup)
  • 4 eggs
  • 135 g salted butter (1 cup)
  • 2 Tsp cocoa powder ( I use Nesquik because my daughter does not like the bitterness of dark chocolate but it is a matter of taste )

1- Wash the kale, gently tear the leafy portion away from the thick stems.

Steam it for 15 min, transfer in the food processor and purée the kale.

Set aside.

2- Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the flour, the cocoa powder.

3- In a small saucepan melt the butter and the dark chocolate gently. Set aside.

4- In the bowl of your mixer, mix the eggs and sugar until it becomes pale and fluffy.

5- Add the chocolate buttery mixture.

6- Add the flour mixture and kale and continue to mix for 1 minute.

7- Pour the brownie batter into a pan covered of parchment paper.

8- Bake for 25 minutes at 180 degrees
